The 2022–2023 golf season has been overwhelming. Things seemed to change a lot for both the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour, mostly in good sense! Aside from some major macro-changes that the game’s structure had to witness, Lexi Thompson‘s performance this year drew mass attention. But why was her 13th year as a professional golfer full of questions?
Well, this is because the LPGA star steered away from an established legacy and was off her game most of the season. 2023 might have even been one of Thompson’s performances on the lower end of the bar. So in such a difficult year, how much did she end up earning on the LPGA Tour?
How much prize money did Lexi Thomspon take home this season?
Despite her choosing not to play in some events this year and barely making it to the weekends in the ones she did play, the Florida-born golf maestro has managed to make a decent sum of money. In 2023, the sum of her career earnings amounted to $284,048.
Even though this is comparatively a much smaller number when put against her career earnings of $13,927,016, it is still a relief, as the expectations from her first half of the year were not even close. In the first three quarters of this year, before the Solheim Cup, she had only made a meager sum of $77,832.
In none of these events that fetched her some share of the prize money did Thompson win a position in the top ten—a rather bothersome fact for this talent house. Post-Solheim Cup, however, Thompson’s performance shows evidence of what one may call somewhat of a comeback. She made most of her prize money during the said period. Her three top-ten finishes have also been since late September, towards the end of the season.
Thompson’s highest feat (prize money-wise) was at the ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican, where she finished tied for seventh place and earned $76,061. Whereas, her top finish was at the Ascendant LPGA Benefiting Volunteers of America event, where she finished in 5th place and earned $75,085 out of the prize pool.
Taking a look at the comparatively lower amount of money that she earned this season, one might ask: What is the reason behind her continued low performance throughout the year? Well, here’s why.
Why was the 28-year-old off her game this year?
Lexi Thompson was off her game this year due to multiple reasons. Initially, the golfer chose to take it slow as she wanted to spend more time with her family and work on her game for events she wanted to perform well at. However, later on, an injury to her wrist became the reason for her comparatively lower performance.
Earlier this year, while accepting that she has been off her game for most of the year, Lexi Thompson said, “I have been struggling this year. I can’t deny that. Everyone has those years or tournaments, though. I just have to continue to stick with it and put in the work.” While 2023 has not been a special year for Thompson, our New Year wish for this star is a much-needed return.
